San Leandro's Crossings Project: Benefits for the Community

Background
The Crossings is the first project in San Leandro’s Downtown TOD Plan.  When it is completed it will cover about 8 acres around the Downtown BART Station.  It will include 700 units of housing – of which at least 100 will be affordable rental housing for families – as well as some retail, BART parking, and other community amenities.  The City will also use this development opportunity to make needed improvements to the walkability and bikeability of surrounding streets, including enhanced green spaces in and around the development.

Creating a Great Community in San Leandro

Background

San Leandro has the opportunity to create a model downtown - a more vibrant, walkable community with new jobs and housing affordable to the spectrum of Bay Area families. This opportunity is made possible by San Leandro’s growing transportation resources and a grant to do a Station Area Plan (SAP) by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

The Great Communities Collaborative

The Great Communities Collaborative (GCC) is a collaboration amongst seven organizations working with local governments and base-building organizations to promote transit-oriented development (TOD) in future and existing transit hubs in the Bay Area.  Working in cities engaged in station-area planning processes, GCC members provide training and technical assistance to local partners to strengthen their advocacy for mixed-use, mixed-income developments that maximize housing within walking, biking and a short transit trip to major rail and bus rapid transit lines.

GCC is also developing TOD tools and communications materials that can be appropriated and applied by interested advocates in their own communities.

Urban Habitat, as a core partner within the GCC, works with local community groups in San Leandro, East Palo Alto and Sunnvale on station area plans.
