The 2008 Elections: What does it all mean and why should we care?

In the context of war, economic and ecological crises, and changing political terrain, the elections will undoubtedly have implications for the next period.
Join us for a conversation that will look at the political moment and the opportunities and challenges posed. This will be a discussion that analyzes the moment, while focusing less on left strategies in relationship to the elections. We will discuss these questions, in addition to others:
· What do the primary races and the early results for both Democrats and Republicans reveal about popular sentiment and the balance of forces in the country right now?
· What does the presidential campaign tell us about race and gender issues in the country today?
· What does it mean that we have a white woman who represents the Machine, a Black candidate with roots in community organizing, a white man who speaks of class and terrifies the corporate bosses, and a Black woman with roots and ties to the Black Liberation Movement all running?
· What can we learn about the apparent splintering of the Republican party?
· Will the Bay Area democratic primary play a pivotal role in determining the Democratic candidate? Why or why not?
