"Hell has broken loose... killings in Mahalla, mass round ups in Cairo, Mahalla and the provinces..."

Please join us for an evening of presentation and discussion about recent and urgent events in Egypt, including the current political situation, the crackdowns by the Mubarak regime against labor, and ongoing workers resistance.  el-Hamalywa will discuss:

  • the strike broken by police repression at Ghazi el-Mahalla factory and textile mill where mass round ups of activists is underway and protests throughout Egypt are happening in solidarity with the striking workers
  • the strategic importance of Egypt as a U.S. client state
  • the impact of neo-liberalism and police repression on the conditions of workers
  • the revival of street protests in 2000 with the outbreak of the Palestinian Intifada
  • the "Winter of Labor Discontent" in 2006, which is currently constituting the biggest sustained wave of industrial action since WW2
  • the role of bloggers and independent media in supporting the strikes
  • what can activists in the U.S. do to support these actions?

Hossam el-Hamalywa is an Egyptian journalist, blogger, and labor activist

"Your solidarity," el-Hamalywa reminds us, "will probably be needed more than ever beforeŠ"
