Bay Area SEC 10th Anniversary
On the evening of December 15th, Bay Area SEC members and Urban Habitat's staff gathered to celebrate our coalition's 10th Anniversary. Guest speaker Sylvia Darensburg, lead plaintiff in the Darensburg vs. Metropolitan Transportation Commission case, shared a rousing call to action Public Advocates accepting 2008 Outstanding Member Awardbased on the impact of transportation injustice on her life. In her remarks, Sylvia thanked LIFETIME, the Transportation Justice Working Group, and Urban Habitat for inspiring her to translate her personal experiences into a voice within the social justice movement. Public Advocates' Guillermo Mayer noted that the Darensburg lawsuit is one of the many things that TJWG is doing to build the base, reframe the debate, and equalize investments in public transportation to improve the quality of life in the region for low income communities and communities of color.
Urban Habitat's Executive Director Juliet Ellis also recognized the following Bay Area Social Equity Caucus awardees for their central role in shaping our work over the past decade. Click here to see photos from the day.
