Review the fundamentals of copyediting and acquire a better sense of how to balance and serve the best interests of your three clients: the publisher, the writer, and the reader.
With drills in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and diction, this fast-moving class explores the practical knowledge and skills copyeditors bring to the task of editing, both online and on paper. The goal is for students to see through an experienced editor's eyes how best to communicate wisely while resolving gracefully manuscript questions and issues of awkward writing.
Sessions will address how to enforce decisions of style by compiling in-house style sheets. We will compare differences between style books, especially Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. and major features of the Associated Press Stylebook. Students will receive many handouts and ample resource information, along with practical tips for getting hired in the local economy.
Copyediting tests will be self-corrected and discussed in class.
Amy Einsohn's "The Copyeditor's Handbook: A Guide for Book Publishing and Corporate Communications" is the recommended text for this seminar. Please bring a copy of "The Copyeditor's Handbook" to the first class.
