In a tough funding environment many nonprofits are looking for new and innovative sustainability options. One model being adopted by a growing number of nonprofits is the social enterprise—a business venture tied to the social mission of the organization and leveraging its core strengths. This workshop will offer examples of successful nonprofit social enterprises and address questions of how to get started and where to find funding. The session includes hands-on exercises designed to help participants assess their readiness for pursuing a social venture and to identify specific earned income opportunities for their respective organizations.

Paul Lamb is a long time social entrepreneur and nonprofit professional. He is currently the Principal of Man on a Mission Consulting, a management consulting firm specializing in social change through business and technology. He is a founder and former Executive Director of The Stride Center, an award-winning program providing computer training and job placement for low-income and underserved individuals in California. He has built several successful nonprofit organizations and social enterprises in the areas of youth, workforce development, and technology. He is a frequent radio commentator and OpEd contributor on technology and social issues through media outlets like NPR’s Marketplace and on CNET.com. Paul currently serves on the Boards of the Social Enterprise Alliance Bay Area Chapter, the Stride Center, and the Jhai Foundation.
