Want to tell your story in the media? This class will teach you all the essentials, from the basics of writing effective press releases, media advisories and op-eds to techniques for doing successful interviews for TV, radio and print. Learn how to develop sound bites, tricks for answering difficult or off-topic questions, mistakes to avoid, and how to respond to inaccurate coverage. Discover what makes a "good source" and how to become one, building lasting relationships with journalists.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice doing television interviews on camera and view their performance on video.

Instructor:
Media consultant Bruce Mirken served as Director of Communications for the Marijuana Policy Project from 2001 to 2009, overseeing MPP's media strategy and serving as the primary spokesperson. He has appeared on hundreds of local and national television and radio broadcasts, including ABC World News,Anderson Cooper 360 and The Rachel Maddow Show, among others,and has been quoted in the NY Times, USA Today, Washington Post, LA Times and many other publications. In June 2009, he conceived and scripted a California TV ad that drew international coverage, including a segment on The Today Show. His op-eds and commentaries have appeared in the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Alternet, and many other print and online news outlets. Prior to joining MPP, Bruce was a freelance print journalist specializing in health and social issues, including AIDS. His news articles and op-eds appeared in such publications as Mens Health, AIDS Treatment News, The Miami Herald, SF Bay Guardian, The SF Chronicle, The St Louis Post Dispatch and the Advocate.
