Alameda Labor Council completes first-ever Boards and Commissions training
Twenty participants completed the Alameda Labor Council’s first ever Boards and Commissions training this summer. Speakers from the political, legal, finance, and public service fields addressed key community needs and moving an agenda. Community group members of Oakland Community Organizations (OCO) and Low Income Families’ Empowerment Through Education (LIFETIME) joined with members of the teachers, electricians, public employees, community college student leaders, machinists, building and construction trades. Three graduates have appointments to local boards and commissions. Thanks to Laney College Labor Studies and EBASE for providing administrative support and coordination, the Labor Council will continue to collect names for possible future trainings in 2007.

Getting Ready for Change: Green Economics and Climate Justice
After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans will never be the same- but it can be better. Out of the tragedy of 1,836 deaths and countless lives destroyed, we can work to forge new paths by promoting sustainable development, equitable housing and raise awareness of race and class inequalities caused by reckless ecological policies.
In order to promote these goals and celebrate the Summer issue of Race, Poverty & the Environment, Urban Habitat has brought together speakers from the Bay Area to participate in a roundtable discussion on Climate Justice, Green Economics, and the rebuilding of New Orleans.
