Rally for Houston Janitors at Chevron Global Headquarters in San Ramon!
As part of a national day of action, nearly 100 supporters rallied outside the Chevron global headquarters in San Ramon November 15th. They called for justice for Houston janitors who have been out on strike for nearly a month. Carrying signs that pictured janitors and their families, 10 people were arrested in an act of civil disobedience for blocking traffic while the crowd chanted for justice.
Houston janitors, who are members of SEIU, were making a meager $5.15 an hour and did not have health insurance. They went out on strike October 23, demanding a contract that would raise their wages to $8.50 an hour, give them more work hours, and provide them with health insurance. While the janitors work at various buildings, Chevron was one of the largest tenants in Houston and therefore has the power to settle the strike.
In the end, a city-wide union contract will more than double income for more than 5,300 janitors and families, allow them more hours, and provide health insurance. Houston is the second major victory for janitors in less than a year, and is being seen as a major breakthrough in the South and for low-wage workers around the country.
