Greetings SEC members & friends:

Next Friday morning, December 7th, come to Oakland and take a sneak peek at what the SEC buzz is all about for 2008!  Based on your guidance provided during the SEC Evaluation, Urban Habitat has been staffing up to support programs that strengthen our coalition, build shared analysis & shift power around regional equity issues - such as:

  • A 10th Anniversary 'State of the Region' event.
  • Expansion of the SEC Steering Committee to be truly regional, multi-sector, & multi-issue in scope.
  • Inauguration of four local hubs to link local & regional programming, membership, & media/communications.
  • Revamp of the SEC website with new coalition tools by our Media & Communications Associate, former UH Office Manager Marc Caswell.
  • And much, much more...

The SEC's Transportation Justice Working Group (TJWG) will also kick off a series of convenings around how proposed increases in transportation costs related to global climate change could impact low-income communities and communities of color. Join us in a conversation on how we can ensure that low-income families are not hurt by these measures and how our communities can benefit from the revenues generated by these measures.

Through SEC engagement, the TJWG has grown into a regional force around transportation equity and has helped keep equity at the front of transportation decisions- and this "hotly" contested issue is no exception!

Please let us know if you plan to join us so we can provide refreshments: rsvp {at] urbanhabitat {dot} org.

Happy Holidays,

Connie Galambos Malloy, SEC Coordinator

400 Neighbors "Build Oakland for Everyone"

The gym at St. Anthony's Church could barely hold the energetic crowd that gathered on Saturday, November 17, 2007 for "Building Oakland for Everyone: A Summit on Jobs, Housing, and Justice." Over 400 Oaklanders came to the summit from neighborhoods across the city, where many struggle with violence and pollution, a lack of good-paying jobs, and overpriced housing.

Residents hold up signs at the the 2007 Summit

In fact, a recently released report by the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (EBASE) and the Oakland Network for Responsible Development (ONWRD) has found that the bottom twenty percent (20%) of Oakland's families control only three percent (3%) of Oakland's wealth.

Through discussions held in four languages, summit participants set forth a new vision for Oakland's future- one where the city uses new economic development to create good-paying jobs for residents, affordable homes, and safe, healthy communities. READ MORE...
