Becoming a Member

Organizations interested in becoming Bay Area SEC members or allies are asked to review and complete a Platform Statement. The Platform Statement frames our regional coalition’s guiding principles and lays out collective programs and strategies. It also clarifies coalition structure, decisionmaking, and membership, and gathers relevant baseline data about each participating organization.

2008-09 Strategic Plan

As Urban Habitat approached the Bay Area Social Equity Caucus’ 10th anniversary, we felt it was key to engage current and previous members, funders, and allies to document past successes and identify opportunities to further refine our approach over the coming decade. Dozens of organizations lent time, energy and thoughtfulness to our Evaluation & Planning Project.

Working with the Institute for Social and Environmental Justice Education (ISEJE), the Bay Area Social Equity Caucus staff developed this document to help plan how the Caucus will grow over the next 2 years.

Activity: Beyond Words: Picturing Our Perceptions

At the first Bay Area Social Equity Caucus quarterly meeting of 2008, Urban Habitat’s Leadership Institute Coordinator, Pam Graybeal, facilitated an activity ‘Beyond Words: Picturing Our Perceptions.’ The activity’s goals were to have SEC members spend a few minutes to take a step back and think about concepts related to the Caucus’ goals and activities in a different way.

The Urban Habitat Program (UH) (1) was founded in 1989 by Carl Anthony, Karl Linn and David Brower of Earth Island Institute to build multicultural leadership for sustainable development in the Bay Area. With Anthony as Urban Habitat’s Executive Director, the organization quickly became a leading figure in the environmental justice movement and an early advocate for sustainable development.
