SMART train critical to green transportation strategy

MY FRIEND and colleague Hal Brown listed some great ideas for reducing car trips in his Marin Voice column ("Some real alternatives to SMART," Aug. 17).

Providing financial incentives for employees to carpool, walk, bike or take public transit is a necessary step to get cars off the road and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and it has been working well since the county introduced the Green Commute program last year.

Allowing and encouraging more telecommuting also can be an effective tool for employers to reduce vehicle trips by their employees.

Rare opportunities for Marin workforce housing

MARIN and much of California have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to provide a supply of affordable housing without fostering environmentally unsound growth. The current precipitous decline in real estate prices makes that possible.

Instead of foisting inappropriate development, government and housing advocates including the Marin Community Foundation must shift their focus.

Plan calls for hundreds of homes in Corte Madera

Hundreds of new homes could be built as part of a long-term vision being considered in Corte Madera.

A draft Corte Madera general plan that includes proposals to add 300 housing units as part of an expanded shopping mall at The Village at Corte Madera and 180 units at the WinCup plant site near Highway 101 is up for review at public hearings this month.

A draft environmental impact report also has been prepared for the plan, which offers a tentative road map for growth over the next 10 to 20 years with a variety of early stage possibilities for the town to expand its retail and housing options.

Tenant advocate stages protest

A tenant who serves on the Marin County Housing Authority board is so frustrated that tenant complaints are unresolved that he walked out of a board meeting this week in protest.

The Rev. Isaiah Wallace, one of two tenants who serve with the five county supervisors on the board, said, "Somebody needs to do something to get them started up."

Bridge board vote was a needed step

THE GOLDEN GATE Bridge District board has bought some much-needed time regarding a new Doyle Drive. And time certainly means money.

The bridge board voted 10-8 to approve a carefully phrased "congestion pricing" plan that is primarily designed to preserve a $158 million federal transportation grant for the Bay Area.
