A recent Texas Institute of Transportation study confirms what many rush hour commuters in the Bay Area have long suspected—traffic congestion here is the second worst in the nation, Los Angeles being the worst.[1] Specifically, in the North Bay, Marin County has logged the largest percent increase in traffic in the Bay Area between 2005 and 2007; up 20 percent from 2004.[2]

SMART train critical to green transportation strategy

MY FRIEND and colleague Hal Brown listed some great ideas for reducing car trips in his Marin Voice column ("Some real alternatives to SMART," Aug. 17).

Providing financial incentives for employees to carpool, walk, bike or take public transit is a necessary step to get cars off the road and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and it has been working well since the county introduced the Green Commute program last year.

Allowing and encouraging more telecommuting also can be an effective tool for employers to reduce vehicle trips by their employees.

Rare opportunities for Marin workforce housing

MARIN and much of California have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to provide a supply of affordable housing without fostering environmentally unsound growth. The current precipitous decline in real estate prices makes that possible.

Instead of foisting inappropriate development, government and housing advocates including the Marin Community Foundation must shift their focus.
