Facing opposition, Assemblyman yanks car fee bill

SACRAMENTO — Concord Democratic Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier has decided to pull his legislation to increase document fees on car buyers after running into opposition as it made its way through the Senate.

After shepherding Assembly Bill 1939 through the Assembly in April — despite opposition from consumer groups — DeSaulnier saw that it was unlikely to get through two Senate committees chaired by fellow Democrats, so he spiked it.

Public transit advocates make case in state Capitol

SACRAMENTO — While there's no shortage of people making rounds at the Capitol asking for more money from the state's cash-strapped treasury, those organized by the Oakland-based Transportation and Land Use Coalition on Tuesday were unusual.

State's unemployment rate holds steady

by Sam Zuckerman

California's job picture was little changed in April as the state lost 800 jobs outside the farm sector after seasonal adjustment. The unemployment rate stayed steady at 6.2 percent, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday.

The tiny drop in payrolls, less than the survey margin of error, shows that, as the economy has turned down, the job market has weakened but hasn't had the bottom fall out.

April marked the second month in a row with a small drop in payrolls, as March's originally reported 1,000-job gain was revised to a 2,100-job loss. California's jobless rate is the third-highest in the nation, behind Alaska and Michigan.

Defend our cities - vote no on Prop. 98

The best that can be said of Prop. 98 is that it is poorly drafted. Supporters of 98 like to portray it as an attempt to defend our homes against the prospect of a hostile takeover through eminent domain. If that were the case, the measure would be carefully tailored to accomplish its stated purpose. It is not. It goes further. Much further.

Over the last year, the scientific consensus on global warming has gone from highly probable to unequivocal. In less than a century we may double the amount of carbon in our atmosphere. No scientist or climate model can predict the exact consequences but we do know one thing: Our current path is a high-risk, uncontrolled experiment on the only home we have.
