AC Transit Votes to Preserve Fares, Seek Alternative Funding
In response to the Transportation Justice Working Group’s rally, phone calls and media coverage, the AC Transit Board of Supervisors voted to prevent the proposed fare hikes for youth, seniors, and all riders and examine other funding strategies-- for now.
Last night, AC Transit’s Board unanimously voted to postpone a fare hike until after November’s elections. They also unanimously approved a staff recommendation to place a parcel tax on the November ballot (details below).
AC TRANSIT HAS NOT GUARANTEED THAT IT WON’T RAISE FARES (even if the parcel tax passes in November).

Exciting classes at Merritt College's Environmental Program
Healthy Cities, Green Collar Jobs, Native Americans in the Bay Area, Environmental Racism, Outdoor Education are some of the courses being offered by Merritt College's Environmental Program beginning mid August.
Courses are free to low cost and open to everyone. They are taught primarily evenings and weekends by community activists and professionals in the field.

Oakland City Identification Card Coalition (OCICC) kicks off campaign
On March 5, 2008, Centro Legal de la Raza convened the first meeting of the Oakland City Identification Card Coalition (OCICC). About twenty-five individuals representing various organizations and constituencies met and discussed how to build unity in Oakland by creating a city identification card for everyone who lives in the ‘Town in a move to implement the human rights aspiration of its new sanctuary ordinance.
At-Large Candidates' Forum: Building Oakland for Everyone Continues
On May 14th, the Oakland Network for Responsible Development (ONWRD), the Oakland People’s Housing Coalition, and the League of Women Voters sponsored a “Building Oakland for Everyone Candidates Forum” for the At-Large City Council seat.
Sustaining the momentum of the Building Oakland for Everyone Summit last fall, where 400 Oakland residents gathered to articulate their vision for Oakland, the forum was an opportunity for Oaklanders to raise questions about issues important to working families and to hear directly from the candidates about their positions.
