Reducing violence from one ‘hood to the next

In front of a diverse crowd of about 300, 19-year-old Phon Chanthanask made a declaration he was proud of.

“I am not a high school dropout. I am not a drug dealer or a gang banger. I am not the negative of Richmond, California,” said Chanthanasak at the Sixth Annual Youth Stopping Violence Summit on Saturday.

Richmond to lay off six to help balance budget

Richmond will lay off six city workers to close its budget shortfall amid declining revenues.

The number represents a quarter of the layoffs initially proposed last month. The six layoffs combined with about $7.5 million in cuts in September means the city's $158 million operating budget is balanced, but officials warned that more tough decisions might be ahead.

"I'm not sure if this is the end," City Councilwoman Ludmyrna Lopez said. "We're still facing a real estate problem, and a lot of our revenue comes from property taxes. People are losing their jobs. They shop less. We don't have the same amount of sales tax that comes in."
