Congressman to view City of Richmond’s nationally recognized “Best Practices” program
Richmond, CALIF – Congressman George Miller will visit and meet with students at the Richmond BUILD Construction Skills & Solar Installation training program. Richmond BUILD has received local, national and international recognition as a “best practice” Green-Collar Job training program. To date, 19 graduates (20% of the program’s total graduates) have obtained a Green-Collar job, 16 of whom obtained professional Solar Installation jobs.
WHY: With the escalating price of oil and the immediate need to develop alternative and renewable sources of energy, the solar industry is poised to be one of the answers to the energy crisis and the reduction of global warming. Congressman George Miller, Chairman of the House Education & Labor Committee, sponsored and supported the Green Jobs Act of 2007. This legislation will train workers for the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries. These are industries that will have to undergo significant growth if we are to reduce emissions and heat trapping gases into the atmosphere.
WHAT: The City of Richmond is widely recognized as a leader in providing training programs in the Green Collar industry with the Richmond BUILD Construction Skills & Solar Installation training program. In addition to solar installation training, a youth Energy Efficiency Employment Program was implemented in partnership with the Rising Sun Energy Center to expose Richmond youth to career opportunities in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
WHEN: Congressman George Miller is scheduled to visit the Richmond BUILD training program on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. The Richmond BUILD facility is located at 360 S. 27th Street (corner of S. 27th & Virginia - next to the George Miller Children’s Center), Richmond, Ca.
