Transportation Policy Director - Full-Time Exempt
TransForm, a leading environmental and social equity nonprofit, is seeking an experienced advocate to join our team as our Transportation Policy Director, a full time exempt position.

TransForm has also launched innovative programs that increase the number of children walking and biking safely to school and engage people in planning for great communities.
ABOUT THE POSITION
TransForm is seeking a Transportation Policy Director to lead efforts to influence transportation policy and funding decisions in the Bay Area, including the region’s first Sustainable Communities Strategy, an integrated transportation and land use plan to reduce the region’s greenhouse gas emissions, improve public health and make communities more affordable.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in coalition-building, communications and advocacy, as well as a background in transportation policy or planning.
The Transportation Policy Director is a senior-level position that will be supervised by TransForm’s Deputy Director. The position will work out of TransForm’s main Oakland office and involve travel throughout the Bay Area, including to TransForm’s San Jose office.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and conduct successful advocacy campaigns to influence regional transportation policy and funding.
- Shape and articulate TransForm positions on transportation planning and funding decisions, usually in coalition with a diverse set of allies.
- Expand and deepen participation of allies, especially social justice, health, environmental, business, labor and other key stakeholders.
- Develop white papers, fact sheets, and action alerts for major policy campaigns.
- Represent TransForm at public meetings and in personal communications with decision-makers.
- Work with TransForm staff and partners to implement media and communications strategies and serve as a spokesperson on regional transportation and planning issues.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with decision-makers, diverse allies, and agency staff.
- Supervise regional transportation staff, providing support and guidance for county-level efforts.
- Manage regional transportation team’s workplan, identify priorities and needs, and track progress.
- Contribute to grant writing, tracking, and reporting.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Five (5) years of advocacy or policy experience. A Master’s degree in public policy, transportation/regional planning, or a related field may substituted for one (1) year of experience.
- Strong record of achievement, with increasing levels of responsibility in previous positions.
- Demonstrated understanding of advocacy campaigns, organizing and coalition–building.
- Excellent writing, group presentation, and meeting facilitation skills.
- Experience working with and building consensus among a diverse range of partners.
- Strong project management skills and an ability to manage multiple assignments, set measurable objectives, prioritize work and ensure partners meet shared deadlines.
- Excellent strategic thinking, planning skills, and political instincts.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Google apps, and comfort using a contact database.
- Ability to work independently and as part of team.
- Demonstrated commitment to making positive social change in the world.
- Open-minded and flexible, with both a sense of humor and humility.
- Experience managing and supporting staff preferred.
- Strong understanding of transportation planning, funding, and links to land use preferred.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week), exempt position. Competitive salary, commensurate with experience. Compensation includes health and dental insurance, generous vacation time and an exciting, team-oriented work environment.
