Bayview Project Organizer - POWER

People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER) is looking for a dedicated, passionate and organizer to staff the Bayview Organizing Project.

WHO WE ARE: POWER
is a multi-racial and multi-lingual organization in San Francisco fighting for racial, gender and economic justice. Rooted in community action organizing, leadership development and alliance building, the heart of POWER’s work is developing the collective strength of low-income people to control the destinies of their communities and workplaces. Our projects currently include: organizing against gentrification and for community-led development in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood; organizing immigrant Latina workers to win improved conditions in the domestic work industry as well as immigration reform legislation that meets the needs of working class immigrants; and organizing young people to make positive change in their communities. Our guiding principle is that the people who are directly impacted by the policies we are seeking to change should lead the work of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES
for the BAYVIEW ORGANIZING PROJECT (BVOP) ORGANIZER include:
1) Membership Recruitment and Leadership Development: The Organizer will work with staff and members to recruit and retain members, conduct 1-on-1’s to identify potential and emerging leaders, and create leadership development activities to deepen the analysis and skills of current and potential leaders.
2) Campaign Strategy, Research and Development: Work with POWER’s Lead Organizer to develop short- and long-term campaign plans and goals. Develop and support members and leaders ability to conduct research, develop strategy, organize direct actions, and coordinate media work.
3) Staff Development & Supervision: Supervise members and organizing interns on strategic campaigns, and build their capacity and skills as organizers.
4) Alliance Building: Strengthen current and introduce new collaborations with ally organizations and individuals to build the constituency’s power and to build a broader movement for economic, racial and gender justice.
5) Build POWER: In addition to staffing the BVOP, this Organizer will work with the rest of the staff and members to build the whole organization. This will include participating in POWER’s other areas of work, representing POWER, its work and its vision in various external activities as well as assisting in organizational fundraising activities.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Fluency in Spanish a plus.
· Strong commitment racial and economic justice, bottom-up social change and building social movements.
· Demonstrated ability to recruit members into a fighting organization.
· Ability to work well independently and in conjunction with a team.
· Knowledge of issues impacting working class people in San Francisco.
· Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, including working-class immigrants, African Americans, advocates, politicians and bureaucrats.
· Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal).
· Willingness to work evenings/weekends as necessary.
· Computer literate, particularly Microsoft Office and database applications.

The Organizer position is a full-time position with a starting salary of $30 - 35,000 depending on experience, plus full benefits. Great opportunities for growth, development and leadership.
